We have a responsibility to our students. This responsibility goes beyond teaching them what we think they should know based on our own personal aesthetics or background. The music world keeps changing and the expertise we needed to develop to earn a living yesterday isn’t what’s required of the average musician or educator today. Our students need to be able to play within diverse styles, to read music well, and also, to create music through improvisation, composition, and arranging.
Today’s educators must prepare our students with the skills they’ll need to function well in their professional lives, whether they become professional musicians or music educators or not.
