Improv Quote of the Day: It Still Breaks Through…

English: Musical notation ornament

But even after the gradual development of a musical notation…the urge for instantaneous musical expression, for spontaneous re-shaping of apparently finished compositions… remained alive and manifested itself at different times and in different places in varying degrees of strength in all sorts of ways. At no time, however, not even in periods when strict traditions in creation (composition) and re-creation (performance) prevailed, was improvisation completely absent, and it still breaks through even in the musical life of our time, when rationalizing and mechanizing tendencies seem to have won a complete victory.
